After the pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter claimed song of the summer two years in a row, it is no surpise that she would come back for her third. After the legendary release of her sixth studio album "Short and Sweet", and then the deluxe version of that album, she has secured her place as an icon in the industry. Sabrina has formed her identity through the power of being a woman, and instead of sappy love ballads, she states the obvious through her music :
"Never heard of self-care
Man-child
Why you always come a-running, taking all my loving from me?"
Pop music has slowly transitioned from songs begging for love, to songs about knowing your self worth (and realizing that if someone is not adding to your life, then they don't deserve to be there). This is an experience that every woman has to go through, and an experience that fuels Sabrina Carpenter to write the next hit. An 80's inspired bop with a country twist is what resulted, ready to claim the title of "song of the summer". "Manchild" is clearly an anthem - to every girl who knows that she deserves better. It's powerful what Carpenter does, and how she markets herself to embrace what she is worth, and encourages others to do the same.
What is even better than a surprise song from Sabrina Carpenter? Well, the Internet's response, of course. Comments on Carpenter's Instagram are exactly what you'd expect, with big brand names commenting things like "Welcome to your tape Barry" (Mejuri) and "Damn that salt in the wound BURNS rn I know it" (Tropical Smoothie Cafe). Although we can all assume who this song is about, the unique dynamic of writing a song warning a man not to mess up, watching that man mess up, and writing a song about the aftermath, is the ultimate revenge and power move. All we can do now is continue streaming "Manchild" while rolling all of the windows down, and be grateful that we aren't stuck with our own Manchild. Thank you Sabrina!
